Rose and her daughter did not die in the car crash...and awaken in a hell. They were knocked unconcious and awoke in Silent Hill.
There are things worse than death...like 'living' in a realm removed from reality...but not being dead. Doomed to never walk again the dimension you were born into...but trapped in a shadow filled, horror show built on shifting sand. Rose and her daughter Sharon are not dead. They are trapped in Silent Hill....forever. A fate far, far worse than death. The only ones who fare worse are the parishoners who sought sanctuary in the purgatory of Silent Hill...and are now languishing in a hell created by the little demon girl Alyssa...of whom Sharon is innocence embodied...the purest part of what was once a human girl.
The cop is dead...and her spirit has moved on. She...of all the characters...including Dahlia and the husband...is free...and very, very lucky to be so.
A good adaptation and very disturbing...

Yes, but, how come the husband heard his wife after he took the mask off? i'm thinking it could have something to do with those fumes. But the cop thing yes, totally makes sense, i didnt know the wife was in a car accident, if so, where is the jeep, or motorbike when the cop and husband go through silent hill?
And I assume, that the wife, cop, and the other people they meet never leave silent hill? if so, then yes, the wife and cop would be dead, but that still leaves the question about how the husband heard his wife in the school, but only AFTER he took that mask off.

The answer of what Silent Hill truly is, by nature, pretty bizarre. I have actually played all the video games so it does help to give a bit better perspective of what it actually is but only the creator has definitive answers.
Silent Hill is a place that a character has to be invited to. It only collects those who have some sort of use or meaning to their presence there.
It is very much like a different plane of existence. However, for all the characters ever trapped there. You never see any of them really return to the real world. Hence why in the movie there was no real happy ending.
I think I am more biased towards liking the movie because of my experience with the games. They can be quite entertaining if you can handle graphic images and have an appetite for the surreal.
Hope this helped somewhat =)

yeah some how the wife and her kid and that patrol cop are on a different "plane", they got sucked into it by silent hill cause of the little girl i think
more then likely this happened as they crashed and then woke up in the other realm

i think what happened was the wife and the cop both died in the car/motorcycle accidents. so when the cop and the husband go there theyre in a different "plane" because they're not dead.

I think so too... because they both were in the school at the same time only that the school was new when it's the guy inside, but when it's the girl... it was like old and burnt...
this is a scary movie...
