When I upgraded iTunes 6 to iTunes 7, it kept all of my original songs, playlists, podcasts, and applicable settings (I had to go back through everything to change some brand-new settings like Gapless Playback, but all the old info stayed the same). If you uninstall/delete the old iTunes first, all of your songs will still be present on your computer (unless you also have it delete your existing library in the process), but they might not appear in your Music Library until you add them back in. If you have iTunes upgrade itself, it'll transfer all of that important information for you, as well as prompt you to upgrade to any newer firmware that's available for your iPod.

No, you will not any information. All your music files will transfer over automatically in the same condition. I have also updated iTunes many times before with no problem what so ever.

No, but if you don't have an iPood, why do you have iTunes? And if you get Windows Vista, iTunes won't work on it. iPoods are being strategically pushed out of the market....
iPoods suck....
