I saw this scenario on an x-files show, and though I may severely doubt the hallucinogens part, the idea that carnivorous organisms that span acres (fungii?) seems likely.

If there are such things, can you guys tell me the name of it, or an example location, encyclopedia/wikipedia/news url, etc?

Uh....hallucinogen? i don't think so... most hallucinogens are chemicals that plant uses to defend against something, mostly insects. It won't be secreted into the environment to attact prey.

As for carnivorous organisms that span acres...the only organisms that spans acres are fungi, because their hyphae can extend for many miles. However, fungi are never carnivorous; their are either parasitic or saprobic (decomposers).

The reasons this was on x-files is it is not true and a stretch of a possibility. There arn't any organisms I know of that are that large and lure prey with hallucinagins. I'm also pretty sure that there arn't any several acres wide, although many people thing some individual trees in a forest can share a root system with other trees, thus consider them one organism. I think your chances of finding something like this is pretty slim.
