there are quite a few reasons for that. The first being that the CDs which are being read are scratched. Some of the CD drives are very sensitive and cannot read a CD with a few scratches on it.

The second reason can be a problem with a loose connection ur CD drive. You should just shove the power cable a little harder into the back of the CD drive.

How old is ur CD drive? the drives give up after a few years, around 5 or 6.

I don't think its a problem with hard disk or OS. just lemme know if u need anymore help on this

Auto-play is still a feature that is always being updated by Microsoft. It is possible it could be the os especially if your running an OS later than XP. Sometimes it could be the software/CD your running could be design for an other platform of windows. Not all CD/DVD will work with the auto_play feature.

Also if your running xp it is also possible that this problem may occur if a background service or program is interfering with the Auto-Play function.
