It can be related to metal / wood / or other material. A tooling and die shop is just what it says they build tools to do other jobs with and dies for machines. This day and time there are lots of different material out there that they can use in making these {parts}. The shop itself will have lathes, drill presses, saws, milling machines, and grinders in order to make the parts that are requested. Some tooling shops will build the whole machine or die assembly that will cut or form materials and some shop just concentrates or retooling or rebuilding machines. It is a good trade to get into if you are interested in that kind of work but it usually takes around 5 years or so to really master it.
