WHAT are MODS ? How they r used for/in a Game ?

I've QUAKE 3 GOLD installed on my pc.But don't know how to use MODS available for it. TRIED "Q3F" but can't understand the process.

mods are game modifications for creating levels, adding weapons, items, etc. Custom made things for a game.

Quake has been out for quite a while so I would think somewhere on the internet there should be a collection of mods.

MODS are modifaction of a game. Just like Half-life, one of its most popular mods is counter-strike, spec ops...
