I don't know about your use of the word "better," but in general knowledge is power.
Being bilingual can help you find a job and get paid a higher salary. It can help you help others. It provides you with new perspectives, making you more well rounded, affecting the lives around you more positively. America has always been a land of many languages. How it affects our culture is a long one...

Being in California, bilingual benifits means to me: being able to speak to illegal aliens. Helping illegal aliens to live in this country while not paying taxes, helping them to take advantage of our health care system (benifits to them not you). It means people learning a second language in their own country because lazy people come here and don't want to be bothered to have to learn the language of the land themselves. It doesn't make you better, it makes you useful to those people. Sure you can get a job or a buck an hour more for being able to speak another countries' language, but at what cost to this countries security, culture, tax base, healthcare, ect.

It does not make you better. But it does make you smarter and often more effective in communications. Not to mention the convenience it affords in the nation whose language you speak.
