1. Ask as many questions as possible in class. As questions you asked will always be remembered.
2. Form a study group, learning together is more fun, and teaching and asking each other also help you to remember.
3. Don't stay over night and always have enough rest.

Without isolating one or the other, the more you combine, the more the effective. You also want to stimulate them "affectively" as well; this means helping them understand why this concept is important and its role in their lives.
(Active learning involves the kinesthetic, auditory, visual, and tactile plus the affective.)
