I own a Compaq, and so far, I've had a very good experience with it.
Yet, whichever brand and model your elect to purchase, make sure that the processor, RAM and hard drive are ones that exceed your current need, because laptops tend to be expensive to upgrade. .
If you're just looking for something to browse the web and run programs like Speadsheet, Excel, MS Word and download files, then don't get caught in buying something that is all hyped up and costs over $1000. There are plenty of laptops out there from Compaq, Sony, Vaio and so on, that costs well under $1000 and have a fast processor, a lot of RAM and a large enough hard drive for someone looking to surb the web and use most conventional programs.
The only reason you'd have to buy something overly expensive and extravagant, is if you're a big gamer and plan to play games that require a lot of RAM, a really fast processor, special soundcard and so on.

good luck

Brand name does not grantee BEST BUY!
Issues that you should look up on the Internet before you buy and make a selection so that you will know what to compare against when you go into the store:

You want to see the model that you are going to buy Turned ON! Your eyes have to like the screen otherwise that computer is a loser for you! Is the screen to dark? Small? Do you like the way the lettering looks. If your eye is unhappy, look for the next one! Keep ion mind, no person can see what YOUR eye sees, so make your eyes happy FIRST!

The Computer:

CPU (Dual Core = 2 CPU on one chip - Much better than Single core), Intel makes the fastest DUAL Core CPU, AMD makes a better price/performance CPU

Hard Drive: SATA Drive is better than IDE.
80GB or more is much better than less than 80GB.

Graphic card is better than On-Board-Graphic-
Network: Must be both Blue Tooth and Ethernet
ready (already installed and working)

You want them to include a copy of the Operating System Installation disk with REGISTRATION Number, not just a RECOVERY DISK!

A good exercise to help you s to go on line to a site that will let you configure your laptop the way you want it

laptops are very similar to pcs, but they need to be treated with a higher level of care.

1. no liquid or food near the laptop...even one drop can short circuit it!

2. carry it in an approved case as much as possible to avoid damage.

3. ensure powercords are not a tripping hazard...the worst thing ever is to see your laptop fly across the table as you are writing an email

4. only put light things ontop of your laptop, the screen is very sensitive to high pressure and you will be left with light spots

now onto models:

the fujitsu tablet notebook is a good one as well as an acer...they have a few minor glitches at times, but they work for a long time!

i don't be attentive to lots approximately desktops, yet my laptop is a Sony Vaio, anticipate to pay around $900 yet rather rather worth it. 1GB isn't lots memory, do no longer anticipate to maintain lots, expeically video clips, photos, song etc. in the experience that your in elementary terms utilising it soley for college/artwork and merely saving papers, it feels like a sturdy deal, even then although, you will possibly desire extra area. i might recommend to pay somewhat greater, for a greater effective laptop, i've got heard from many acquaintances and kinfolk that Acer desktops are junk, and to never purchase one. look up and study they're reveiws, there no longer that sturdy... sturdy success!
