Many people purchase graves before they actually die so they could be using those as people wh bought them die.
Another thing is that they sometimes stack caskets two deep for families. I know my nephew is burried with my grandparents in the same plot. (all 3 in one plot) Travis was a baby so the casket was small and grandma was cremated so it was small, then there is grampas casket.

Maybe they just kinda bury them in the unfilled areas and when that's filled they buy more land. I saw our cemetery on the hill do that. Ive lived here thirty years now. And today most people are cremated so they don't take up that much space if any at all at the cemetery. My girlfriends dad is in his place with her. some in a locket most in a box. her mom wants to dump the ashes on a mountain, I don't know how legal that is.

In some crowded areas they are burying people atop other people....
And now there are high rise cemeteries in some areas
And eventually everyone decomposes
And many of them just get built over.
(this is why I want to be cremated)

Well, there are various ways. Some stack caskets one atop another (more common in Europe) and there's always cremation which removes the problem almost entirely.

Cremation is the answer. Instead of burying a coffin, you ashes are buried in a container about the size of a carton of cigarettes.
