Ive grown up without ever knowing my father, or even having a father figure. Growing up it was hard however I feel that facing this void helps the individual by appreciating what they do not have. All the things you see yourself missing out on becomes a top priority to yourself. Just as everyone seems to grow up saying ill never act like my parents. This seems to act in the same way, no father figure so I'm going to do all the things I can to give the support I never received. As for places to actually get these skills. I rely on just watching society as a whole... not imitating it.. but learning how people react to situations and how they cope. Through observing others you can learn to properly function within it. And if you have enough sensibility.. you'll realize to avoid acting like the crowd (as you see peoples stupidity and get your hindsight bias though experiencing it yourself). All and all it comes down to the individual, to either dwell on it or take it as a challenge.

It can be tough. He can learn from various other positive role models (whether teachers at school, friends or other male relatives). He can learn from self-help books. He can learn from the Bible, religious texts. He can be to himself the father that he never had. He can learn to love himself & to be a good man & make a commitment to be a good man & a good father if one day he has a son of his own.

Many boys unfortunately don't have a positive male role model. They may not have a father figure of any kind. If they're lucky then they have a heroic single mom who loves them & does the best she can.

We don't get to choose our parents. Sometimes we get shortchanged in that area. You can't undo the past but you can work on the present & future. Love & nurture yourself. Be the parent you wish you had. Be supportive & caring & strong & loving to yourself. It's never too late to turn it all around.

Good teachers at school, a couch, mentor programs in most towns are fairly good place to start.

Being without a father figure sucks, being with a bad one is even worse.

I suggest Scouts, Boy Scouts, and Eagle Scouts, might be a good place too.

I think the answer lies with you. You seem to know what a "real man" isn't, so ask yourself what a real man is and work toward your own ideal.
