is it similar to a college degree or is it specific to the media agency they work for or what?

Two ways I know:

1. The media agency issues the credentials. For local events, oftentimes a press badge or agency ID is enough for a reporter to gain access.

or

2. The host of the "event" to be covered issues the credentials either directly to the media agency, which then distributes the credentials to the proper reporters, or the event host issues the credentials directly to the reporter following a credential request either by the agency or the reporter.

Some credentials are media agency-specific, some are event- or venue-specific.

Hope that helps.
