Unless it happens when you're using your DVD or CD player, could be the harddrive since it has the most moving parts.

Most likely the hard drive. Some hard drives like those made by Western Digital are known to make these strange and obnoxious sounds. Check your S.M.A.R.T. status to see if your hard drive is on the verge of death. If so, back up your data and buy a new hard drive! If the noise has always been there from the day you got your PC set up, then you probably don't have much to worry about. If it's a sudden thing that has happened recently, I think your HD may be dying.

That's just coming from a mini speaker. I know it sounds like someone firing a gun in an old game boy, it just means that the computer is at work. Whenever you open an application that's the time you will hear that ticking sound. Even during startup, shutdown, and opening other applications.

Whenever you are downloading files, accessing files, opening programs etc your hard drive will be active and some hard drives are loud (especially older ones). It also depends on the type of computer case if you can hear well inside it. If you are doing a virus scan while you sleep you can hear it scanning like mad during the quiet. If this isn't what causing your noise it could be a bad or noisy fan. I hope is not a rat!

When do you hear this sound? Is it during startup, shutdown, when you access a file or is it constant? If it is mainly during startup, shutdown and/or accessing files, it means that the drive is failing. Backup your data and buy a new hard drive. If there is a constant noise which you hear, its probably the fans. Clear the fans of dust and see if you still get this sound. Make sure the cables are all tied up and its not close to the blades of the fan. If it still continues, you need to take it to the service center.

Hope this helps.

probably something not good...

i suggest you visit a service centre as trying to fix it yourself will undoubtably void the warranty
