You can read the Wiki summary of Naruto, but that wouldn't be fun. Go ahead and watch all the episodes, the time goes by fast!

You also don't have to watch about 100 of those episodes. Up to episode 134 or something like that, the anime starts airing fillers so that the manga can distance itself.

All the eps can be found on the site below:

Episodes 1-135 are the main storyline of Naruto. Episode 220 marks the end of the fillers. Shippuden continues the plots from Ep 135. So maybe you should watch 1-135 then the released Shippuden episodes. The fillers can be like side dishes once you've finished watching the recent ones. I think you should be able to watch 100 episodes in a month or so.

Oh and go for the japanese version. It's heaps better than the english. I think the english censors some bits out (with violence and stuff like that). Plus you get to learn some cool japanese words.

Although I understand that many people like the Japanese version, I suggest the English version if you are a native English speaker. It is much easier to get lost in the excitement of the show if you don't have to constantly read. Subtitles take you out of the experience.

Fortunately, Naruto did not receive many cuts in the English version. They are minor and hard to notice unless you are a fanatical Japanese fan. If the small edits bother you at all, the DVD's feature the show unedited, in both languages, with or without subtitles.

If you decided to try the English version, you can catch up using the torrents here:

With those torrents you can reach episode eighty in no time. After that you will be able to watch new episodes when they air on Cartoon Network or you will be able to download them from many places on the internet.

Definitely watch the Japanese version!!!
The English dubs for any anime usually tend to be a bit annoying, and the Japanese versions are just more authentic; the subtitles are more accurate (to how the creator intended the anime to be). Also, more Japanese episodes are out, so you can watch more without necessarily waiting. Yay Naruto!
To get caught up with a long anime like Naruto, try watching one or two episodes a day, whenever you have time, I guess (or if you don't have time/want to watch more than 1-2 eps a day, stay up until two or three, like me, and watch it with the English subs on and the volume off so other people don't get mad at you for watching anime at two or three in the morning :P)
Good luck/have fun!

Always choose the original language even though you have to read the subtitles. About the voice cast, the Japanese voice actor was chosen to fit with the characters' personality, i don't think the English translation will be that strick in voice casting. Another thing is culture, if you watched the English version, you will never know Naruto's favourite line, Dattebayo. Even though, it doesn't mean anything. Respect the original. Plus, the translation work is slow. So, better to have Japanese version.
