Are you implying that dark places and watery madia are intrinsicly unsuitable or that there is a more effective medium for such growth to occur in.

Truth is that those environments are chosen by life forms for a variety of reasons:
1) liquid is an effective lubricant, and a shock absorber, which improves the safety of the environment.
2) darkness, despite common misconceptions, is a safer and more comfortable environment, especially for developing organisms. This is true regarding extremes of light in particular, which a growing organism is not cabaple of withstanding at an early age.
3) Dark and liquid environments, especially both together, provide the parents with a means to hide from predators more effectively, giving the young a better chance of survival. If it's dark, a hunter can't easily see it's prey. If it's liquid, a hunter can't easily smell or hear it's prey.
4) liquid environments are often composed of substances that the young can and will use as sustenance (food, etc) in the first segment of it's life. What better way to keep an organism alive then to give birth to a capsule that includes the baby and it's food alone together, or to grow a baby in a womb with an umbilical cord attached from the beginning. It's natures way of ensuring that it's easier to do it correctly than it is to make a mistake.

Zoology studies have shown the necessity of early cell formation required liquid medium for development ,allowing chemical completion of amino acids, and their combination into more complex proteins. With the development of essentials, cell walls became possible, and further internal cell development began to proceed.Even bacteria and viruses need moist environment conditions to propagate. Darkness is a benefit since the ultraviolet portion the light spectrum has a negative effect on many bacteria and single cell animal varieties.
