Reported for acting stupid?? Somebody needs more fiber in their diet. I'm still shaking my head in disbelief. Sounds like a disgruntled "Hallway Patrol". Rice whore, consider yourself reported for such an awful screen name.

Dogs have glands back there. Sometimes when they get full they can itch. A dogs only way to scratch back there is to scoot on the ground (or carpet).

Sometimes glands have nothing to do with it and the dog just wants to scratch....

I believe that it is usually a sign of their having worms. If you check the carpet or their furry behinds after such a session, you will probably find something that looks like squashed bits of pasta. They may move! (I know-EEW!) The vet should be visited. Cats do the same thing.

their anal glands are full and they are trying to empty them. sometimes the glands don't secrete on their own and the motion of dragging their butts on the carpet helps release the fluids.
you may have to take dog to vet to have him empty glands. uncomfortable for dog but a quick procedure, in fact some groomers are skilled enough to take care of the problem.

Primarily to scratch and alleviate the itching on their back flanks due to either dry skin, fleas, matter getting stuck in their fur, or because their anal area is inflamed and irritated, not unlike hemorrhoids in humans.

Sometimes its because of blocked anal glands. You
should ask your vet or groomer for a demonstration of
how to clean them. (its a matter of squeezing in the
right area near the anus) Sometimes its just a
way to scratch an area they can't reach.
