The removal of Phenol from aqueous solution by using granular charcoal is complex.

Factors effecting the efficiency include the method used (bulk or column flow), the mesh of the carbon and the method of activation.

Under the correct conditions, it might be possible to remove almost all of the Phenol. Less expensive methods with high flow rates and larger carbon particle sizes might be very ineffective.

Charcoal slurries have even been used for ingested phenol poisoning.
