Yes, u are right it is a slow game, and only a game, but the sentiments of a nation are involved. I do not know why, but the complete nation, be it india or pakistan, is totally involved. They take it very personal and the sentiments get hurt very quickly. It is more the spirit of the game, than the physical game they are involved with. Maybe, u are very right, the mind completely agrees with u, but the heart refuses to agree.

I don't really know but I can tell u that it is a result of many factors.
1. With British ruling us for 200 years, it is but natural that they have promoted their national game in this country. Though this slave mentality cannot be attributed to everyone, it did serve its part to popularize this game.
2. Another factor is the marketing of this game by the British, through World Cups, county teams, etc. making every competition an EVENT. When it is an EVENT, media tends to gather around it. When media gathers around the commercial brands come-in to cash-in on the easy advertisement avenue - one hording, in front of thousands of people at a go.
3. In order to perpectuate this easy ad campaigns, the Companies sponsor these 'event'. This turns out be a cycle.
4. When some one excels in any area, and the media is "managed" around such easy/small victory, it is seen very big by the common people. This can be applied to cricket too. When in the beginning, nascent, just-liberated Indian cricket team made small victories against other countries and especially against their erst-while rulers, media naturally gives too much publicity.
5. In fact, it is here, media terms this a battle where the 'Ruled' overpowered their 'Rulers'. And when this happened in the early years of independence, everyone's attention turned toward this game.
6. And there is no other game the English play (with such fervor). Therefore, India can make them eat dust only in Cricket. And when India does it everyone is awestruck. This pulled the crowds, media followed and Commercial organizations started promoting it for thier selfish interest - the cycle started.
7. Further, this is a game where individual records can be made inspite of team's performance. At the same time when the team wins, individual's pathetic performance is forgotten - this is the same as Sachin's performance.
I think these are the factors that promoted cricket in India. I may be wrong but this is my personal feeling.

See,India is crazy about cricket, there is no doubt and there's nothing wrong about it.Every country has its National obession. Ok u find it slow ,but hunderds of others dont. Its the matter of personal choice.
But one thing I wud like to say ,Indians r not as crazy about cricket as the media makes out to be. The media frenzy is maddening. Its too much to take. The hype they create is sickening. Dont get fooled by media. They r the ones who r making fools out of us. Mad discussions taking place all d time and what not. The TV channels r the worst culprit. They r here for money. They create controversy out of nothing and EX cricketers on channels talk nonsence(most of d times).Even though these guys know everything, they too talk all d rubbish for the sake of money. It stinks
