Suicide is permanent.
I know a boy who killed himself because he broke up with his girl friend. I also know an other girl who killed herself because she slept with her best friend's boyfriend. Ok, that is terrible and I'm sure they were hurting, but all I could think was 'will they still be feeling hurt/embarrassed in 5/10/15years time? No, I highly doubt it.
On the other hand, my friend killed himself because he was charged with first degree murder. I can see why he killed himself. What would life be like for a 17year old in jail for such a huge part of his life? It would be horrible. But I think this is such a cowardly thing to do and I look down on him for doing this. I look down on all of those who are the result of suicide.
In the last 3months of 2006, my small town of less than 100,000 people, we had more than 10suicides. I knew 3 of those.
People have no idea, absoutly no fu*king idea how many people care for them, how many people would miss them if they were gone. (excuse the swearing but this is emotional for me)
I believe suicide is wrong on so many levels. One of the boys I knew, he shot himself in the head in his bedroom. His parents had to clean his brains off the wall. My other friend, he hung himself. He lives across the road from a primary school. A little boy found him.
I don't know how anyone could do it to themselves.
I've suffered depression, been suicidal. But although no matter how much I didn't want to be in this world anymore, no matter how hard it was. I never gave up. NEVER! The first 17years of my life have been extremely traumatic and I'm hoping that the rest of my life isn't so exciting.
Suicide is bad. Although I can see where you are coming from, I still don't believe there is any good in it. I'm not sure if anyone you know has commited suicide, but it's a horrible thing.
Sorry for rambling on, I'm extremely passionate about this topic.

Because your decision will hurt someone else. Family, friends, classmates. Suicide leaves an ugly legacy that is unfair to those left behind. It is cruel. It puts siblings and other family members at a much higher rate of doing the same thing. It brings the judgement of the community on your loved ones. It would be less harmful to physical hurt someone than it is to commit suicide on them from what I have seen. The emotional wounds do not heal. The guilt lingers on forever from what I've seen. And on a purely selfish reason depression doesn't last forever. It is an episodic illness and even if you don't take medication almost all people will cycle out of it eventually (and some research on deep brain stimulation is showing promise in really difficult cases). That means you are killing your potential happy times. The times where you will feel as good as you feel bad right now. Your marriage day, or the birth of a child, or just enjoying a kick *** piece of chocolate cake. I've been suicidal I know how deperate it looks, but I got out of it. Barely, and I am so glad I did. I have a wonderful husband and a cute little dog. I do some volunteer work and have a part-time job. Life isn't perfect, but it is good. Therapy is hard work, gut wrenching to look at your life sometimes, and medication isn't perfect either, but it is worth the effort to get well and lead a good life. Don't let this time in your life define who you are.

Suicide is a deeply personal and individual thing.
People often do it as an escape from their problems because they see no other way. Others feel so much sadness within themselves that they see no other option. I'm sure there are alot of reasons for why people suicide.
I think there is alot of stigma around suicide and self harm and alot of it is perpetuated by lies and misunderstanding.
Personally, I would rather help someone find other solutions to their problems than let them 'be happy' and kill themself.

What if you just have done everything in this life that you could ever want to do? I have raised one of my children to college age and my other child obviously does not want a father through his behaviors. My ex wife did not want me. Other than that I have had a decent life, career, friends, travel, love, hate, options, fat, skinny, sober, drunk and at times happy. At basically 48y/o what could I want from life. I will have to work till death to put my kids through college so retirement is a huge dream. Only thing now is that I tell my kids to not give up. But hell I grew up without a dad and dads are expendable according to my son and every other source (tv, movies). Just wish there was a god to take me in the night and everyone would be happier and richer. Of course there is no god so no matter how much I pray for it I will wake up tomorrow, have to go to work, pick my son up that does not want me and live in hell for the weekend still answering to my exwife. Cmon man! Please someone give me the strength to buy that gun or walk in front of that train.

I just don't think there is anything that is bad enough to kill yourself over. Things change so quickly in life. I also think that suicide is a very selfish act. The people don't think about the devastation they will leave behind. The family and friends who will blame themselves for not being able to stop them. I have lost a couple friends to suicide when I was in high school. I think about those people now and how different life is than it was back then and it makes me sad and angry that they gave up on life. I think life is always worth living, no matter what is going on in your life now. Tomorrow is a new day and each new day brings a new opportunity to change or grow or experience something new. To me, suicide is such a waste of a good human being and it hurts the people who love you that you leave behind.

It's interesting that so many people feel that suicide is "wrong" because some religion says it is. I'm a Christian, and I believe that suicide is an option that God would approve of in many, many cases. Of course, Christianity in this country has been hijacked by the "religious right," so those Christians like myself who can think for themselves don't make it onto the nightly news on into the newspapers, so our views aren't known.
My personal belief is that suicide is only wrong if it's done in revenge. In other words, if someone kills themselves because he or she is thinking, "I'll show them." Almost all other reasons for committing suicide can be justified in some way.

I personally don't find anything wrong with it.
Sometimes in life it is so difficult to live, we just want to give up. There are many situations where I can imagine this. Including pain and suffering. Slow death. Death of a loved one. I even think a broken heart at times can justify this. Lost in life and not wanting to continue. No desire in life because nothing makes you happy and no purpose left.
On the flip side in my opinion most people are opposed of suicide is because it hurts their loved ones, and friends. Also it is an easy way out of life. And because some people think they can help others in life.
I think it is our own lives and we should have that option if need be. I am neither for it nor against it. But I can see both perspectives.

it's all about religious power of our souls and how even the law deem it immoral, impractical and illegal to kill ones self. Since the bible says we go to hell if we do so.
However, If I got laid up in the hospital with a deadly disease or something that will drain the family resources and I will never get better then by all means I am biting the bullet and meeting my dew worm ranch at the grave yard.

We all have the right to take our own lives. Feelings of "deliberate self-harm" are usually "reactive" - like your girlfriend/boyfriend dumping you, failing in your exams or after a great loss.
However, this decision to take your own life becomes an "irrevocable" decision once you decide to. Its therefore important to think and talk to someone about ALL the other options available to resolve the issue - before you decide. Loneliness is a very big component of the desire to take your own life and in some way suicide is actually a cry for help.
Our lives are precious and before we decide to end it, we must seek help - which is available around us - friends, counselors, etc Talking helps!!!!
We need to be sensitive to messages (spoken & otherwise) that our friends pass on to us and respond with empathy and concern. A threat to take one's own life even if uttered in jest should NEVER be taken lightly. We should ALL be good LISTENERS - as opposed to hearing!
•7 – 9% of the average population has contemplated suicide at some point in their lives.
•60 – 70% attempt suicide due to certain immediate events.
•Of the above, 10% are young adults below the age of 19 years.
There are numerous reasons for people attempting suicide :
• A loss of self esteem / loss of confidence.
• Illness and serious injuries.
• Loss of face resulting in humiliation.
• Unsuccessful in a love relationship
• Grief due to death of a loved one.
• Alcoholism.
• Financial and family problems.
Feelings of inferiority (present early in life) over a period of time precipitate into a life threatening crisis. Severe emotional stress often causes depression which may be either due to some particular happening or marked by great feelings of guilt, wherein all failures are attributed to one’s own fault. During depression there will be a greater sensitivity towards loneliness, one’s personal identity or lack of it, and aggression turned inwards into one’s self. This is perhaps why the loving husband or mother kill themselves and the whole family.
People who have had previous attempts should also be deemed as potential suicide risks. Their already low self esteem is further completely eroded because they believe that they are even incapable of successfully taking their own lives!
Symptoms of depression are not always strikingly apparent among adolescents. It is a mistake to feel that a child will not take his life unless he “looks” depressed. Some behaviour patterns to look for in a potentially self-destructive adolescent are as follows:
1) Adolescents contemplating suicide are apt to have little verbal communication with their parents. This in fact, is a part of the problem. They are more likely to communicate with a peer or another interested individual in whom they have some faith and trust.
2) They are likely to give signs like giving away a prized possession with the comment that he will not need it any longer.
3) He is apt to be more morose, withdrawn and isolated than usual.
4) Young males are likely to have experienced the loss of a father or a close father figure through death or a divorce.
5) Girls who attempt suicide are likely to show much difficulty in their relationship with their mothers, especially when there is a weak and ineffective father figure.
6) Adolescents under severe emotional trauma are apt to smoke heavily.
7) Scholastic achievements and general efficiency may decline.
8) Involvement in alcohol and substance-abuse may be prevalent.
9) Though apparently accidental, one should be alert to instances of prior self poisoning behavior.
10) Be alert for pointers in the youth’s behavior or talk suggesting that he wants to get even with his parents. A prominent component in suicidal behavior is the wish to take one’s own life in order to make those left behind feel guilty for not treating the victim better when he was alive.

Ok i'm currently a criminal justice major and am writing one of my papers for finals on assisted suicide. Suicide alone is not a crime. Some people believe it is selfish because they are selfish themselves. If a person wants to die let them. Counsel them on other options but if the person really wants to die, they are the one who will meet their maker and no one should critize this. Also in the bible God does not advocate nor allow suicide, so it does come down to how deep your faith is.
