Its called "eodema". Swelling of the hands and feet are common during pregnancy. And it happens because as the pelvis widens the circulation and nervous system can be slightly cut off. It causes fluid build up in the limbs. Its totally normal and goes away once baby is born.

It can also be a sign of Preeclampsia.
But keep an eye on it and get your BP checked regularly. Also ask for a urine test if it worries you. Sometimes a pregnant women can have erratic blood pressure - one minute its normal, next it can go and then back down again. A urine test can determine if you have protein in it and if so it means you may have Preeclampsia. If you get flashes in front of your eyes, excessive dizziness, nausea, a pain in your lift ribs or your face starts swelling as well (swelling in the face isnt normal) then go back to your doctor and get another checkup.

Swelling, or edema, is a very common discomfort of pregnancy. It's estimated that about 75% of women will experience this excessive accumulation of fluid around the legs and ankles at some point during pregnancy. Here are some hints on dealing with it:

Try rest. Most women report that swelling subsides after a good night's rest, or several hours lying down.

Drink a lot of water. The extra fluids will help flush out your system of waste products which may have increased swelling.

Limiting the amount of salt you take in can cause swelling as well. As with all things, moderation is the key to balance.

Try water or hydrotherapy. Water immersion, water aerobics can help with swelling. Being in a pool of water helps the body shed the excess fluids through the kidneys, while supporting the pregnant uterus.

Here are some other tips to help reduce swelling and related discomforts:

- Don't wear elastic topped socks or knee-hi pantyhose.
- Wear comfortable shoes. Slip on types work best.
- Put your feet up when possible.
- If you stand at work, try to move around slightly or get a stool to prop a foot up.
- Try support pantyhose.

It's probably the sitting, but you should pop into your neighbourhood clinic for a BP check the next few times you swell up. Just to be sure your BP isn't fluctuating.

Pre-clampsia is nothing to fool around with.

If your BP stays constant and is normal, you need to get up and move around at work every 30 minutes or so. If you can get a foot stool for under your desk, do that too. You can damage the vessels in your legs and feet if you allow them to swell every day you work.

Also, invest in some support stockings.

It's important that your doctor keeps a close eye on your BP, and regularly checks your urine, as you could be getting toxaemia, which causes kidney damage and could threaten your child. Get up and move around frequently at work, to ease the swelling, and cut out salt, and dont eat too much protein. Get regular checkups.

Tald to you doctor. it could be a sign of preeclampsia, or toxemia. That is bad. Usually accompanied by protein in the urine, swelling, high blood pressure. Very bad.
