How many have started one? Been involved with one that travels?

Yes. They attract a lot of freeloaders. You must be ruthless about eliminating the drones. Communes only work if people are putting into them.
For a commune to survive it must be at least as ruthless about human resources as a business. Sorry but true. I only exaggerate slightly.

I was in a commune in Big Sur, CA. This was in the 60's. I was also in a commune outside of San Francisco, CA in the 60's.

i have not been in a commune, however there is one close to my community. i know a guy that has been in it, he said it was like hanging out with friends ALL the time, that you never get a moment to yourself.
