I think it's something that people do to avoid showing their true self! They are afraid they're not good enuff, as is.

Until recently, I didn't realize how many different disciplines were associated with beauty and style. Influences from art, psychology (think advertising), history (namely fashion), science (herbalism - the affects of natural ingredients in lotion/makeup AND dermatology...and just biology and knowledge of how cells--dead (like in the case of hair) or alive (like in the case of skin cells)--react to various stimuli). It's an extremely complex field and I don't think that it gets as much credit as it deserves.
That being said, it is a medium through which people may express themselves. With so many different meldings of styles and cliques, almost anything goes; you just have to be bold enough to rock it.
One could also look at it as a form of advertising--I know what you're thinking, but it's not just for sexual solicitation. Think job interviews, first impressions, customer-server interactions. In all of those cases, you are, in a sense, advertising yourself. Fashion and style dresses you up (literally) to do this more/less effectively, whether you realize it or not.

Style is a matter of personality and letting that shine. It should also be comfortable and practical. Everyone should develop their own sense of style and not let anyone else dictate to them how they should look and what to wear. Looking great is a must, but it should be on your own terms. About the hairstyle, try something new, you can always change it. A change is as good as a holiday.

Natalie portman and Kate Winslet, they consistently have a classic form and is particularly stylish, natalie likes the 20's low waist dresses and Kate is often very stylish together with her lengthy dresses and each each and every now and then shorter ones
