Yes...I have 4 kids and it has done wonders. They all have/had pets when my marriage broke up last summer and their dad moved out. They gave the kids extra comfort. It teaches them resposiblity and reminds them they are not the king of the world.

I have a nine year old son who has had a dog since he was two. He loves that dog, and we used the dog to teach our son responsibilities. Our son feeds, waters, and walks the dog every morning. When he gets home from school, he walks and waters her. Before he goes to bed, he walks and feeds her. He has taken care of his dog without skipping a beat, it's second nature to him. I don't know what he would do without that dog, or what the dog would do without him. They are so cute together (by the way, we do walk her while he's at school, in case you were wondering). Animals are great for kids.

I guess it depends on the age and the personality of the kid. i plan on getting my son a puppy, but not until he can prove he can do some things for himself. It probably won't be until he is 10 or so.
