Can you do it on your own?

If you know how to weld properly and lay down a good bead, then yea you can put a new muffler in yourself. All you really need to do is make sure you get a muffler that has the right bends for your style of car. Then just cut or disconnect the pipe from the catalytic converter and hang the new muffler and pipe.

I highly suggest taking your car to a shop to ensure that the muffler is installed correctly. You don't want to have carbon monoxide leaking into your car. It's deadly!

You could do it, but it might be better to let a muffler shop do it since it might take some welding.

A lot depends on how the muffler is put on the exhaust pipe. It will usually take some cutting to get the old one off. That can be a dirty and difficult job. Once a muffler is off it's usually a matter of just fitting the new one on the exhaust pipe.

Depending on the age of the car, you might wind up replacing pipes as well as the muffler.

if you have never done this before,
ask someone who has.
doing this job properly is alot of work.
also, it's near the gas tank, so
don't play with a welding torch,
it could spell disaster.
a private mechanic can change
it for a cheap price. just pick up the muffler
and bring it to someone that has done this before.
or ask if the person can come over, and show you how
to replace it.
