I usually have about 4 or 5 separate piles.
1= Whites that can be bleached - pure white or something old used as a rag.
2=Darks, I include most deeply or brightly coloured items, NEVER use bleach on these. If you are washing a new shirt that is bright red you should only wash it with similar colours so the dye doesn't run onto other items. Usually one wash is enough to take care of that problem. I would put my light reds with my dark reds.
3= Lights, these are the pale colours that you don't want to bleach - soft pastels, tans, etc. You can wash your shirts that are white with some other colour in this pile.
4= Towels, I wash my towels separately & never add fabric softener. The softener prevents your towel from absorbing water as it basically coats fabric with a film.
5= Delicates, these are things that you would want to wash by hand & hang to dry, or at least wash on the delicate setting of your washing machine.
I always double rinse all of my laundry, if you ever watch the final rinse cycle you would be surprised by how much soap can still be in the water. Most people don't bother to do that.

Ok, you do need to sort a bit, definitely keep all the solid whites together, wash with detergent and a bit of bleach.
Buy a product called Shout Color Catcher, its perfect
for laundry idiots. You still should sort a bit, like do all the
jeans and cords together ( you should turn the jeans inside
out to keep them from losing color too quickly) If you have
a lot of the dark reds, enough for a whole load, then do them
together. Otherwise, use one sheet of the color catcher
in a load of mixed colors, that way if something runs, the
color goes onto the color catcher sheet instead of your clothes. This works well with clothes that have color and white
together. Remember to turn T-shirts with printed designs
inside out for washing and drying, it keeps the designs from
flaking off.

it's OK, your going to be fine... this is how i do my washing and I'll tell ya my mom would have a fit with some of it....

i do coloured clothes
white clothes
blue jeans and other pants
and towels

if you have a new shirt that is red then was it with other red clothes or wash it by itself the first time... it should be fine after that.
if you have a shirt that is white with a little bit of print on it...it is OK to put that in with the white clothes

i do my pants separate just cause it's easier to me and if i accidentally put in a new red shirt or any new dark coloured shirt i don't want to turn my pants pink... my husband doesn't like that much.... if that should happen, just wash them a couple more times by themselves and the pink color will come out.

i wash my towels and bed sheets in hot water with a little bleach, because i don't want to sleep on or dry off with anything that still may have dead skin cells on it and oil from my body... if you get what I'm saying... i feel like my stuff is cleaner that way...

anyway i hope this helps some and happy washing...

Well the safest way is to wash whites separately from colors. If you have cotton or cotton/synthetic blend fabrics, the cotton can have two types of dye: fiber reactive - and it is color fast (it does not bleed off) or direct dyes - cheap and fades badly. If the fabric fades, it will put dye in the water and the dye will attach to anything else that is cotton or cellulosic. This is also a sure sign that it is a shoddy product and you don't want to buy that brand again! To prevent that there is a simple cure - ice cream salt! Yes, salt stops direct dyes from fading! Put a handful in per wash and it will help preserve the color. And cold water also inhibits fading.
Never wash wools in a machine if you can help it - hand wash them.
Never use chlorine bleach on colored cottons or on ANY nylon! Ladies note: bleach will destroy bras and hose like a mouse on cheese! While fiber reactive dyes on cottons are generally ok in chlorine bleach, it will destroy all the color in direct dyes.
Polyesters use special dyes that lodge inside the fiber structure and are hard to fade out, but bleach goes basic in hot water and saponifies (turns to soap) the polyester fiber itself so wash these in warm/cool water.
Good luck! :)

Keep your colors away from your your whites especially if they bleed which some reds can do, always test to see which ones bleed in case of doubt the ones that don't bleed can safely be washed with all colors and whites, you can test your clothes for colorfastness by doing this, dip a part in the warmest or hottest water they can handle if they are knits then you can only do them in cold or warm water, but simply if you want to set the colors all you really have to do is wash them in one cup of White Vinegar to set the colors and so they don't bleed on your other clothes anymore. Good Luck !

Anything brightly coloured, wash in cold.

Anything new or relatively new and likely to run, wash separately in like colours and in cold for at least 10 washes.

Anything white with coloured lettering, wash in cold always or they may bleed into the white.

Anything light or white wash in hot or warm.

Anything like lingerie wash in warm or cold.

Bras and other elastic containing undergarments, wash in warm or cold and no bleach, it rots the elastic.

Anything stained should be sprayed with a stain remover and soaked overnight if the stain is really bad. Test the stain remover on an inner seam first to see if the garment is colour-fast or you'll have a big faded splotch where the stain used to be.

Also, check out Hints from Héloise, for a wealth of fantastic advice on this and other essential household tips.

Good luck.

Separate whites from everything else. Things that are blue, black, etc., can all be mixed together. Things that are red that may bleed should only be washed with similar clothing. That way, when it bleeds, you won't see it.

Green and red can be washed together. Since you can't separate the white undershirt, put it in with the other colored clothes, so you don't have the colors bleed onto your whites...nice shirt, are you Waldo?

anything you feel can be bleached without damaged should be in one pile, all the dark colours in another, and all the light colours in another. As for combinations, use judgement, if bleach damages it dont put it with the whites.

next step: using the washing machine. Put your stuff in. Put bleach (Ariel or Tide) in the bleach compartment (if whites). If there isnt a bleach compartment, it is safe to just throw in there the bleach. Turn on the washing machine (to normal). And finally add the softener (downy) to the softener compartment.

VERY IMPORTANT: If there is no softener compartment, do not put in right away, wait untill the washing machine is half full of water.

This is how I sort my laundry:
whites
colors (red, yellow, pink)
darks

If it's mostly white with colored letters put it in white.
Wash your whites in cold/cold to prevent the colors from running. Everything else you can wash in warm/cold. Remember washing things in warm or hot water will shirnk them a little especially if they're new. So if you don't want anything to shrink at all wash it in cold. And if you're ever in doubt just wash it in cold.

I hope that helped!

you can put any color including white's in that you want together, just use cold water, choose the normal load, then put in detergent, NO bleach. when done put in the drier on whatever heat you want with a drier sheet, and your good it's the simplest way. if you wanted to separate and stuff you'll need more info but it's really not necessary unless you are really anal, and i dont want to explain the harder way.
