The Earth has a history of sharp climactic shifts.
Each results in extinctions, a reduction in overall biomass and increased pressures to adapt to the altered environment. The crises resolve to periods where biomass increases, opportunities in novel and open niches become available, and new species have an opportunity to expand their populations in the more friendly environment.

Speciation is the creation of new species. Episodic specition means that the creation of new species happens in episodes, or that speciation occurs in a short period of time, in a burst, followed by a long period of little change. It's part of the punctuated equilibrium model of the tempo of speciation, and scientists have found that for the most part, this episodic speciation occurs rather than gradual speciation, meaning that most species are created in bursts of rapid change rather than a slow, gradual change in morphological change.
