There is a very easy way to do this. First boot into safe mode (F8), and log into the Administrator account. After that open a Command prompt (run > CMD) and type in "Net User" (without quotes). You will see the accounts of the computer listed.
Than type in "Net user [name] *" (for [name] put in your wife's user name listed above (make sure to add the * !)). Than you will be prompted for a new password. Type it in (Note: the cursor will not move when your typing, this is normal) When thats over close out and reboot into normal mode. And log into your wifes account using the new password.

OK, here is how to do it assuming you have not done anything fancy with the Administrator account on the computer (most people don't even know about the Administrator account so this should work for you)...
Shut the computer down and then restart it.
As it begins booting start hitting the F8 button.
The computer will bring up a menu screen giving you a number of boot options....
Select boot in safe mode and then press enter
.. be patient while it starts and bypasses a number of files..it will finally bring up a screen that will show you a couple of user names including "Administrator"
Choose the Administrator user name
Wait a few minutes and then go to control panel.
Choose users and select the user name that you want to access and change the password to one you will remember
Exit the control panel, reboot your computer the normal way and use the new password ...and you are set!!
Good Luck!

Per Windows Lost Password tips

Lost User Passwords. (Windows XP)
If you have lost or forgetten a user account password in Win XP, simply log in as the computer administrator, and go to control panel, user accounts. Here you will be able to reset the password for any of the systems user accounts.
Lost Administrator Password. (Windows XP)
Slightly more work needed if you lose or forget the Windows XP administrator password.
First reboot Windows XP in safe mode by re-starting the computer and pressing F8 repeated as the computer starts up. Then (in safe mode) click Start and then click Run. In the open box type "control userpasswords2" without the quotes - I have just used quotes to differentiate what you have to type.
You will now have access to all the user accounts, including the administrators account and will be able to reset the lost password.
Just click the administrators user account, and then click Reset Password.
You will need to add a new password in the New password and the Confirm new password boxes, and confirm by clicking OK.
All done, you have recovered the lost adminitrators password!

I am now not one hundred%, however check out restarting the laptop. When the curser is flashing within the most sensible left hand nook (loading) press F8. This must deliver up a black menu. Select XP working approach. A new menu must arise after which decide upon "Run in secure mode with networking." This would possibly skip the password reveal and get you into your laptop adequate to examine your settings, mainly, your password. You may have restricted use of your laptop despite the fact that in secure mode. Again, I am now not confident, however it is valued at a shot.

Note: The information in this answer is provided only for the user to legally recover his/her passwords.
Yes, there is. If she wants to recover her original password (decrypt it), she should use this website and programs. I have used it before, and I have not had any problems. Also, there are programs that allow you to reset or change the password, but this website will help decode the password and if you can wait two days, it is free! Follow the instructions (and you could contact me if you think I can help). Happy computing!

Yes, as your computer boots up. Press F8 repeatedly. This will send you to the safe mode menu. Select safe mode. It wont look pretty because it runs only the vital things. But you can access your files.
Edit : i forgot which key it was, try F5 thru F8 at the same time.
