Firstly you have to have a windows xp installation cd. Put the installation CD in the CD drive (you have to start your computer first to enable the CD drive to move). Then restart the computer. To a certain extent, the screen will show 'Push any key to boot from CD' and you have to click on any key, either Enter or Spacebar, it doesn't matter. Then wait for the installation files to be copied onto your computer. It does this automatically, so don't worry. Then it will display the drives where you can install your OS. Usually people do it on C drive. But firstly you have to Delete the C drive to erase whatever OS that have been on the C drive. Then you have to create it back. All of this can be done by following the instruction on the screen. Then follow the instruction to install the OS on the C drive. For your information, OS means Operating System, like in your case, Windows Xp.

An operating system reinstall disk is needed. Boot to the disc and follow the on screen instructions. If you need help there are many sources online. MAKE ABSOLUTELY SURE that you have everything you want/need backed up. EVERYTHING will be deleted during the reformat.

Sorry but many people don't know this and reformat without backing up.

in most cases you can us your OS installation disc. However most Pre-Built PCs have a hidden recovery partition that will help you restore your system back to day one when you first opened it. Some of the older ones came with a recovery CD. If your not sure and do not have a recovery disc or an OS CD. You can always download a disc utility from your harddisk manufacturer. It will have the Zero option that will write zeros to your drive which in 99.9% of the time will fully delete your drive.

But de sure to BACK UP!!! your data prior to formating anything.
