For many schools, you cannot apply to med school without a recommendatin from the premed committee of your undergraduate school. At elite schools all the students who enter are smart and hardworking, so they do great in school and can all be recommended. But at state universities, anyone can call themselves premed, then get lousy marks. The committees are not going to recommend those guys. They will only recommend the kids who got As in the premed prerequisite courses. So if they eliminate all the lousy kids and only calculate their average of acceptances based on the great kids, of course they are going to have a good acceptance percentage.

There have been some recent articles that supported the idea that the MCAT test is a good predictor for success in med school. So, you want to go to a school that will really prepare you well for the MCAT. That means Stanford or Pomona or UCLA or Berkeley rather than CSU Chico. But if CSU is the only option for you, you know that you have to be one of the best students in that school if you are going to make it to med school.
