what charge would the ions formed have?

Group VI its the column on the periodic table with O and S in it.

The group on the far right, are noble gases, they don't accept or lose electrons at all.
The group next to that, are halogens, they gain one electron as ions, and the next group to the left accepts two...

Group 6, the third column from the right hand side of the periodic table, will do this. These are the chalcogens. They take on the -2 oxidation state in an ionic compound when they take on 2 electrons.
