What kind of music is he into? I Had a "fight song" playlist that ALWAYS cheered me up.
I started with The Ceasars-It's not the fall that hurts
its sad but I lead into Rancid-Indestructable, AC/DC-Rocker and/or TNT, The Doors-Break on through, Eminem-Puke, Andrew W.K.- (prety much any of their songs form the first album), Against All Authority-Sacco and Venzeti.
I had alot more and it was on random. But I find Punk-Rock very liberating, and Metal can be as well. If he's into "urban" or Hip-Hop I grab an asortment or soul, blues, and artists like smutt peddlers whos rough lyrics make anyone feel like the world is conquerable with nothing but a Spork and some will power.

i'm not certain, as i've never had a break up, but when i'm angry i enjoy listening to "I'll Be Glad When You're Dead You Rascal You" by Louis Armstrong. it gets peevishness out of my system and makes me laugh.
i expect Benny Goodman's "Goody Goody" and "'Tain't No Use" also qualify.
