Malaria is caused by a protozoan parasite called Plasmodium. In humans, there are 4 species which cause malaria. Plasmodium falciparum is the most common, and the most deadly, killing about 2 million people, mainly children, per year. The others are P malariae, P ovale and P. vivax. They are less severe, but may lead to death or life long occasional illness.
