Unfortunately there isn't much you can do to lower the power consumption during a deframent. It will need all the resources. Turn off your monitor and speakers. I would just leave it on.

I highly recommend you try AVG anti virus, there is a free edition, and its one of the best anti viruses I've seen. You may have a piece of software hogging resorces. Press CTRL + ALT + DEL and go to the processes tab and look and see if there is a process thats taking up a lot of CPU or Mem Usage. You might be able to track down the program.

Try closing unnecessary programs too. If you have a lot opening at once it will slow things down.

make sure to set your power options so that your computer will stay on and your hard drive will not stop. Also make sure to shut off your monitor, it is actually the most consumptive unit of a computer. As to your slowing problem, I would strongly recommend an anti-virus software, personally I would recommend NOD32, but it is really up to you. While you should be running defrag regularly it is probably not the underlying problem behind the slowing of your system at the age that it is, unless you have been downloading massive amounts of data, in which case it couldn't hurt, but definitely get the anti-virus.

Just keep your computer on throughout the night, there isnt much you can do since defrag takes a lot of resources, besides a computer doesnt take much power so just turn off the monitor and leave the defrag going
