An adult cat. Cats are easy to take care of, you just need to feed them, water them, change the litterbox when it gets dirty, and take them to the vet once a year for shots. An adult cat should already be litter box trained. They can be just as sweet (or sweeter) than any dog, and require a heck of a lot less work!
I would go to the local shelter and see what they have. Get one that you think is particularly cute and has the personality that you want. Make sure it is spayed or neutered. Keep in mind, when you bring it home, it may act different at first until it realizes that it is home.
There are so many adult cats that need homes. You would be saving a life as well as gaining a new friend.

hamsters and any small pocket pet such at mice and guinea pigs are fine, some do require more work than others though and you always will want to practice good animal care such at changing the bedding and enough food and water.
Guinea pigs are great because in my experience they bite the least ammount (way less than hamsters) but they require a daily intake of vitamin c.
With hamsters you will want to watch where you purchase one and make sure it is not sick as hamsters get "wet tail" frequently just make sure it looks healthy in the hind end... no wetness or things stuck to the fur. I used to work at petsmart and most of our returns were due to wet tail.
Mice are also good pets ... they are small .... dont bite alot... and are the most low maitenence i have found. I had two at once and they were great.
You might consider actually starting with goldfish and work your way up :)

One pet. FERRETS!!! They are so cute and fun. The best thing about a ferret is they sleep about 18 hours of the day. They can be litterbox trained, like cats. They are fun to play with and like dogs you can take them outside on a harness and leash. They love to eat almost anything(mine likes eggs) But make sure before you get one that you check and make sure ther leagal in your area. Also do a lot of research, ferrets are unlike any pet you will ever own.

Pet mice, rats, guinea pigs, all can be kept in cages, and apart from feeding them daily, and making sure they have water, and cleaning the cage a couple of times a week, arnt much trouble. They dont bark, need to go for walks, or have their poo picked up. Ferrets are even cuter, cos you can take them places on a little harness, and they are more playful. Plus, a ferret is easy to litter train.

Well, considering all living things require time and attention, I'd suggest investing in a pet rock. They don't poop, they don't eat, and you can paint them all sorts of cool colors. They are easy to travel with and make no noise. The perfect, low maintenance pet!

I rather pick dog because it is really cute. Though it looks like hard to take care of, it is really easy when you know how to take care of it. What I also like about dogs is that they can be trained easy and fast.

Well I'll have to give my usual answer for these type of Q's; Rats. rats are awesome, they are easy to care for. They are nice friendly pets and rarely bite, unlike hamsters. they are also clean pets, and are smart too. Snakes are really cute... and super low maintenance. You only got to feed them every other week or so.
