I purchase a Dell Latitude C610 a few years ago. It had a operating system of Windows 2000. For some reason it just crashed on me. Nothing would work. A complete crash much to my dissapointment.
Recenty I decided to try and get it going again. I installed Windows XP and got it back up again. Now I am trying to make an internet connection but when I do, I am told it is unable to detech a modem. How do I add the modem so I am able to connect to the internet? I have checked the settings and they show everything is enable. Contacted Dell but no help. Thanks for any help. I would be thankful just to be able to connect to the internet once again. Can I purchase a new modem? How would I install it?

You need to install the modem drivers again. If you have the CD great - if not then you need to go to the website for the manufacturer of the modem and try to download the correct drivers that will work with Windows XP. Windows XP can recognize alot of things automatically - but when that doesn't happen - chances are you need to download some drivers. If you call the manufacturer of the modem - they should be able to guide you if necessary. It has nothing to do with Dell - it's having the right drivers. Don't call Microsoft! Sometimes, the Best Buy geek squad can help too. They are not really expensive for basic assistance and they are very smart to fix things for the not so tech saavy person even if you didn't buy the laptop there.

IF YOU HAVE A MODEM INSTALLED YOU NEED TO KNOW THE NAME AND REINSTALL THE DRIVERS.
IS THIS A DIAL UP MODEM? AND DID YOU INSTALL THE SERVERS DISK[AOL,NET ZERO,NETSCAPE,OR MSN]
YOU HAVE TO GET ON LINE TO GET THE DRIVERS FROM THE MAKER OF THE MODEM OR DRIVERSGUIDE.COM WHICH IS FREE AFTER SIGN UP.BUT YOU NEED TO KNOW MAKE AND MODEL OR SPEED OF THE MODEM
