Sorry i forgot to add: I dont understand something. If i wanted to major in poli science and international affairs, why do they call one or the other a minor? What if i wanted the same degree in both, for instance a masters in both subjects, how come some people say they have masters in one, and bachelors in the other? Or a phd in one and a bachelors in the other? What is it called when you have the same degree in both subjects? thanks

International studies and political science are two separate subject areas.

One can double major in IS and poli sci at the bachelor's level, or one can major in one and minor in the other.

Graduate degrees are only in one subject or the other. Many students who hold a bachelors degree in poli sci go on to graduate study in IR (international relations), and others go on to graduate study in poli sci. A masters degree in IR is generally a more hands-on field, for students who wish to work in business or government. A PhD in poli sci is generally the track for students who wish to go on to become professors at universities.

There are, of course, exceptions, but that is the way it works in the broadest terms.

And as to your age question, it is usually important to get some years of work experience before going on to a masters degree in IR, but it is usually not important to get work experience before going on to the PhD in poli sci. It normally takes between 5 and 8 years to complete doctoral studies. The age at which this is accomplished is rather irrelevant.
