I have a friend that's just turned 17 and her doc. told her that all her activity may cause her to get it soon...is that really possible? what if you're not that active? can periods basically just stopped happening for a really long time and come back?

by activity, i do not mean sex, i mean competitive dance. And she went to the doctor already, this is actually about me. I'm 18, but i haven't had a "normal" period since last january ('06)

She needs to find another doctor. If by "activity", you mean sex, that has nothing to do with the onset of menopause. Normally, menopause doesn't start until mid to late 40's,early 50's.. some symptoms are night sweats, not sleeping, almost no periods...crazy mood swings. Everyone can be different, but these are what I had...

In my mid twenties I began having hot flashes, where I would get hot and sweat profusely. Mood swings, ect. All the signes of menopause. I went to many, many doctors. My period was abnormal, irregular and light. Finally I insisted on a hysterectomy. All my pap smears were normal, but I felt that something was very wrong. The day before surgery the Dr called and said she wanted to treat me with hormone therapy because I was only 27 and may want to have more kids one day. I insisted on the hysterectomy, she relented and did one. Two days after surgery she explained my uterus was filled with endometreosis, and fibryn cysts and that was preventing a normal period. And then she tells me I am a very luck girl and that from now own when a patient feels that something is wrong she will listen. The pathology reports on my cervix came back as cancerous. The beginning stages. Had she treated me with hormone therapy she said it would have caused it to spread like wildfire and I would of been dead withing six months. So, the onset of meno pause symptoms created by the uterus filled with endometreosis saved my life. If you are suffering from any abnormal symptoms please get checked. Pap smears are not always right I had 3 in six months all came back normal right before my surgery. Be your own advocate and push for answers and if you are not comfortable with your dr's diagnosis, get a second, third, fourth opinion until you are satisfied. Good luck and God bless.

It's possible to hit menopause at any age. BUT, being active, too active, does not cause it. It does/can cause your periods to stop though, but that's not menopause. Once you slow down with the activity, your periods should return.

When I was 25 I went through menopause. It was called premature ovarian failure. I had missed my period for three months, and went to the doctor to see what was wrong. After many trips to the doctor, final diagnosis was P.O.F. In your case, it may not be permanent, if the lack of menstruation is caused by being too active and underweight, or being overly stressed out. Hope all works out for you.

not a girlie but maybe i can help. young women and maybe even some older ones, who are very active, physically or athletically, may have delayed or irregular menstrual cycles. if they are involved in athletic competitions from young ages, their menses may be delayed for years. look at some of the competitive gymnast who are in their late teens or early 20's and have the bodies of 11, 12, and13 year old girls. their constant training and physical activity curbs the body's estrogen production, delaying the menstrual cycle. once they stop competing, they eventually start normal cycles. that's probably the same thing going on in your situation.

i know that a lot of physical activity can cause it to stop, but if you stop being active it tends to come back. like, i have a friend who does track, she runs so much it is crazy (but she is amazing at it) and she doesnt get her periods all that often, definatly not every month, but she doesnt get any of the symptoms that the women i know who have menopause discribe.

They are mostly simply lonely or now not lonely, being concerned men and women who love animals and shouldn't have the center to show away strays. There could also be a few who're loopy, however,hi there, any one can also be loopy. And exclusive men and women have exclusive critiques on what loopy is.For instance,a few men and women would feel you're loopy.LOL and incidentally,I AM the dictionary woman
