The difference between Serial killers and Spree killers I believe is the time involved in-between killings, the amount of planning evolved, and the mental state of the killer.

A serial killer is someone who kills several people in three or more separate events with an "emotional cooling-off" period in between the homicides. The cooling-off period may last days, weeks, months, or even years. Many serial killers are psychopaths, considered to have a personality disorder and not psychosis, and thus appear to be quite normal and often even charming.

Spree killings tend to be spontaneous acts of violence whereas mass murder and serial killings have connotations of being pre-planned. The U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics defines a spree killing as "killings at two or more locations with almost no time break between murders."
Spree killing is usually set on by the deteriorating mental state of the killer in till they “snap”. Serve depression and other mental problems are symptoms of deteriorating mental health. They should not be mistaken for mass murders either as Spree killing happens in different but close areas. The killer moves from area to area killing as many people as he can then usually kills themself. One well known form of spree killing is School massacres.

Tjime and serial killers tend to be more mental, where as spree killers just "snap" one day, most of the time anyway.
