in limestone regions, water when passing through cracks or gaps , form underground caves. the limestone dissolved in water sometimes dries up and hangs from the roof known as stalactites, if they reach the ground and dry up they are known as stalagmites.sometimes they join together called natural pillars.

They are both structures which form when water is constantly dripping from one position on the roof of the cave. This water contains dissolved minerals (such as calcium carbonate). Each droplet of water leaves behind a miniscule amount of material and over 100,000's of years the structures are formed. A stalactite hangs from the roof and a stalagmite rises from the floor. If and when the two meet this is known as a column.
*I Iearnt a good way to remember the different two in primary school. "A stalactite hangs on tight to the roof and a stalagmite might reach the roof one day".

Stalagmites and stalagtites are found in caves on the roof (stalagmite) and the foor (stalagtite). Generally composed of minerals such as calcite. They are created from the dripping of water that has seeped through the surface soil though the roof of the cave. The have a cone shape and look like stone icicles. The water drips down from the roof depositing minerals creating the stalagmite and then as the stalagmite drips onto the floor the stalagtite is created .

Stalactite : An icicle-like mineral formation that hangs from the ceiling of a cave and is usually made up of travertine, which precipitates as water rich in dissolved limestone drips down from the cave's ceiling. See also stalagmite.

Stalagmite : A cone-shaped mineral deposit that forms on the floor of a cave and is usually made up of travertine, which precipitates as water rich in dissolved limestone drips down from the cave's ceiling. See also stalactite.
