Standard transmissions are lighter, do not use power from the engine to shift, and have less friction causing parts, so all things being equal, yes, standards are more fuel efficient.
As important is your drivng and shifting abilities. Proper technique will make or break your milage no matter what you drive, but good habits will give far better mileage in a standard than is even possible in an automatic.

Not at all, in most cases the automatic is able to best shift your car when the motor is at optimal revolutions. It really depends how you work the right pedal and how often you use the brakes hard. The best mileage will be when you do not need to use the brake at all. Look ahead of you one or two lights and plan to make the light not only on a green but when there are no cars blocking the way. Accelerate slowly when you can and when you warm up a car do not let it run for over one minute. It will warm up very well if you run it for a minute and shut it off for five then start it and after twenty seconds drive it.

This is definately a fact, on average, the same car with a manual verses an automatic the manual will get about 3 miles per gallon more. But you also how to factor in how the car is driven. I can get 35mpg out of our standard while my husband who rides his gears a little longer gets about 32. But yes, a standard gets better gas mileage.

Most of the time ... auto trans lose more energy through torque convertor slippage, slower shifts, etc.

But CVTs are automatic and are generally considered more efficient than standard or automatic multigear transmissions.

And one upper end sport sedan (BMW? Mercedes?) has an auto shifting standard trans.

So the lines are getting fuzzier.

A 4cyl automobile will save alot on gasoline if pushed oftentimes no longer "racing" so that you should communicate city using is harder on gasoline mileage a hybrid automobile is fairly tremendous on gasoline because it makes use of electric powered autos at circumstances to flow the automobile. certain guide trans does get more advantageous powerful mileage because it really is direct ability from the motor no fluid to flow to rob ability. the great automobile maker i think for gasoline mileage is HONDA autos it extremely is in person-friendly words my opinion

Yes, manual tranny is more efficient in transferring engine power to the wheels in any gear. And yes, bad driving habbits can more than compensate for this.
