Oh my god,
I am so glad that I came across this question, because most of the idiots on here are telling you to waste your money on an ipod, lmao, HA!, please, don't get an ipod, they're not worth the plastic that they're made of. if you want a REAL mp3 player that has all the features you'll need and more, last longer, and give you more compatibility with any file format and basically ANY online music store, complete personalization options, and more. Get the Creative Zen Vision M, or if you want something with a more advanced (just bigger) video screen then the Zen Vision, or Zen Vision W (which I've never tried but they should be just as good if not better than the first one.)
(about your legal music download question, i'm sure the answer to that is to get a prepaid music card from bestbuy or something((you only pay like 15 bucks for 45 downloads, or somethin like that)), but just for your FYI, IPODS ONLY let you use I-tunes, which is basically forcing you to give them more money, and in my opinion, they're like the most EXPENSIVE legal way to download music.)
For more info about the Creative Zen Vision M (which I recommend because you listed the IPOD video on there, and it's about the same thing but with 100 more features and 10000 times better quality, not to mention cheaper!) then check out the links below, trust me, please again, DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT waste your money on an ipod, they're only popular because of all their advertising and people only want them because everyone else has em and they want to join the crowd. Do you want to be like everyone else? or do you want to have someone ask you what kind of mp3 player is in your hand and marvel it wherever you go like people do to my Creative Zen Vision M when I have it out? think about it

If you're looking in the 30GB+ range, they all price out pretty much the same at retail. Some come with different features, but a lot of those features are overrated. I use an FM transmitter at work, but I'd never use it in a car or in a highly dense urban area because they don't work very well unless they're stationary and have clear channels to play over. FM receivers aren't a bad idea, but my experience with using AM/FM cassette players was that they got spotty reception unless you're practically within visual sight of the radio tower. Going based solely on what music downloads will play on them is a great way to get tons of misinformation. For the record, iPods natively play music from iTunes as well as all standard MP3s and a few other less common formats, and iTunes can convert WMA files to whatever iPod-compatible format you've got set as your default for ripping CDs. But iPods have the best software on the market right now, which is how they also have the lion's share of the market wrapped up. I'd go with the 30GB iPod Video if you have a moderately large CD collection (it should hold around 500-700 CDs), an 80GB iPod Video if you have an excessively large CD collection, or an 8GB Nano if you have a small CD collection and/or plan to use it during vigorous excercise like jogging (jogging and hard-drive plattens don't get along at all).
As for the cheapest legal downloads, that'd be your existing CD collection. iTunes, WMP, and a few other computer-based jukeboxes can rip any original CD (as long as it's not encoded to prevent playback on a computer, which a handful are), so there's no need to repurchase anything that you already own on CD. Limewire, from what I understand, is currently free, but that just means it's the next Napster, and therefore will be the next online music source to be crushed beneath the boot-heel of the RIAA for enabling the illegal distribution of copyrighted works.

I have a Zune and am utterly disappointed. When I first got it, I was really happy, but so many things are missing from the Zune. The interface is a hassle to use and it doesn't even have a clock. It is also extremely big.
I had a second generation iPod before I bought my Zune, and the interface on it is much better, although it didn't play video and had a tiny screen.
I would go with the iPod Video.

I have and iPod and a Creative Zen Vision M.
The iPod is a great player and is the only one that will work with iTunes because Apple made it so you can't use other Mp3 players on their site. That puts a bruise on the Apple for me.
The Creative Zen Vision is a sold player and works on all other sites.
I like both players a lot. If I could have used the Zen on iTunes I would not have bought the iPod. I do love them both now that i have them.

ZUNE ZUNE ZUNE!!!
I bought an iPod video and took it back two days later. iTunes won't work with the new Windows Vista and I've found out iPoods are strategically being pushed out of the market. Get an iPood and uPood!!! I got a Zune and am extremely content!! It came with the ability to pay only $15 per month and download unlimited songs. iTunes doesn't do that....
iPoods suck!

i would say get the iPod Video.
and iTunes has the cheapest music downloads as well as whole albums, music videos, and even movies for that iPod Video you might buy.
I have a Zune, iPod Video, and a Zen,
but the iPod is the best out of those three.
It is very easy and convenient to use.

iPod Video
All the other ones are retarded fake wanna be MP3 players. Don't steal music from the artists. That is copywrite infringement.
Buy an iTunes card and get all the songs you need.

u should get an Ipod but pay attention to prices on diff stores and how much memory it has and compare the prices ( that is unless u are rich and don't care how much it is) and LIMEWIRE isn't really legal but if u have a good firewall that will do, try go to www.pcworld.com, Napster, search more on-line
