The rocky mountain range affects the climate in this way:
- It makes the Western part of the cascades more temperate
- The temperate weather and the westerly winds together create the rain shadow effect. This is responsible for the lack of rain on the East side of the mountain range (where it is predominately desert).

As the clouds rise to get over the mountains and the warm air and cold air mixes, the moisture is taken up before they get over the mountains and therefore there is rain on West side and none on East side.

Temperate = more rainfall and more green
