Its depends on what kind of laptop u need, There are various categories of laptop,
1. Ultra mobility
These are the laptops which have long battery life and usually have 10"/12"/13" screens and low performance.
2. Business + Home (these are the usual ones)
They have reasonable battery life like 3-4 hrs and have screens 14"/15".
3. Desktop Replacement / Games/Entertainment
They have low battery life like 2-3hrs sometimes < 2 hrs but great performance, huge screen 17"/19"/21" and usually have all the high tech stuff.
4. Apple Mac book.
1 and 3 are usually expensive where as 2 is relatively less priced. I donot know much about 4.
You can see in shopping.yahoo.com for the design and review to make your decision :).

there are three factors i used to select my last laptop: function (how i will use it), manufacturer's support rating and budget.
function: key is to decide if you want a hi performance gaming machine vs an all-around performer vs a light and compact machine. performance gaming machines are heavy and expensive. light and compact units are great if you're doing heavy travel (especially air travel) but you sacrifice screen size, keyboard functionality, and usually on-board drives (optical drive may be separate unit). my recommendation would be to look first at all-around performers. i'd say that would be a 15" screen, minimum 120gb hard drive, built-in cd/dvd burner, 1gb-2gb of RAM.
manufacturer's support - none are exceptional. dell, hp, toshiba, lenovo come to mind as good. check comsumer reports on-line for their reviews of mfgr's service. mac's are probably the best but they're pricier and you're locked into apple's architecture (that's either good or bad, depending on how you view apple's approach).
price: you can get a nicely configured all-around 15" screen laptop for under $1K. if your budget is much lower, try a 14" screen laptop. don't scrimp on RAM - 1gb minimum (tho you can expand that later in most cases). harddrive at least 80gb and larger if you want to store lots of music.
go to best buy (not my favorite store but lots of selection) during their slow period (weekdays during the day) and try out lots of machines.
i really like my hp dv6000z. vista has been a bit of a hassle.
cheers,
gato

The best is alienware. They offer the best performance for the price. My recomendation would be the Aurora mALX (http://www.alienware.com/product_detail_pages/Aurora_mALX/aurora-m_overview.aspx?SysCode=PC-LT-AURORA-M-ALX&SubCode=SKU-DEFAULT)
it is great for gaming and just about anything else you would need it for. If thats too pricey i'd check out some of there other ones

You didn't list a budget, but different computers for different people.
My recommendation is that if you are not computer savvy than a Macintosh computer is probably a good buy.
