Charles I believed in 'Divine Right' meaning he thought that God gave him the right to do as he pleased. He ignored parliament, raised unpopular taxes, and seemed to bring back the Catholic faith. Charles was executed. Oliver Cromwell became 'Lord Protector" 1653-1658. His son Richard Cromwell was unable to maintain his position. Charles II came to be crowned in 1660.
