The word thug generally means -- a ruffian or miscreant, an agressive person. It is derived from the followers of the Thuggee cult of India. The Thuggees were murderers and robbers who would befriend travelers, rob them, and then sacrifice them to the goddess Kali. The cult was defeated by the British over a sixty year period between 1830 and 1890.
