A 600R is a fast bike and at 15 you should consider something else as your first bike. The 250 / 500 and SV650 are great choices.

Sure I have know people who started on 600Rs and 1000Rs and did just fine. I

I also know people who started on 600s and 1000s and are dead.

Most bikers who have been riding for anytime know someone who died on a bike and that is why most will warn you away from a race bike as your first bike. It is common sense, you didn’t take driving lessons in a formula 1 car either.

Besides the safety factor, if you want to be a better rider starting small will help you.

I started my son on a 50YSR. He learned to lean and drag knees before age 14. He learned faster because he was on a smaller bike and had less to worry about.

Get a smaller bike for a year and enjoy it. Then move up to a race bike.

I recommend the SV650. The SV650 can handle with the best of them that is why they have there own race class.
It is a great bike for the track and the street. You can also get the full fairing kit that makes it look great.

As an MX guy myself I know you are a risk taker and you should take your SV650 to the track and learn some needed skills. The track instruction will teach you what MSF cannot.

Since you have riding experience, both of those choices (or maybe even a Kawi ZX600) would all be around the same.

I'm actually more fond of the R6, but I'm riding a Ninja ZX-6R.

I think you're on the right track to choose a 600 bike. They have plenty of zip and yet they have some leeway too. They can also bite you if you don't pay attention though. Just make sure you have taken one of those MSF classes. You'd be surprised how much you learn from it.

It seems like most of the people who keep pushing 250's dont even ride sportbikes. You'll be fine on a 600. I started on one, almost everyone I know who rides started on one. I know people who started on 750s and 1000s too and were just fine... not that I am recommending that.

My advice is to get an older bike to start out with because you are bound to drop it at least once. The CBR and R6 are both great bikes but also take a look at the gsxr 600.

At a buck 40 a 250 would be anything but slow. But lets face facts you are 15? and not going to be a buck 40 all your life. If you can afford the price difference go for the 600 If it is tooo fast you can just not twist it sooo hard yeah right!!!!

NEW 250s dont get slow.....200kph on a light weight bike is quick...thats about 120 MPH for the non metric amongst us..

600 cbr & R6...are only a moderate amount quicker in top end.....but they get there in under 20 seconds....

your funeral....learn to ride a road bike first..then get a quick one..
