This depends on the type of defence ur playing and the what position ur playing! There are different formations to defence: flat back four, sweeper / stopper, zonal or man to man! Basically u have to figure out what formation u like and which the team is playing! Some tips for defence is if ur playing man to man always be goal side (u should be between the goal and the ball ) When u are marking u have to keep with ur man and u want to keep them out of the center and push them to the sidelines or torwards the corners, u dont want them to get inside or down to the line so they can make a sharp pass to the 6 for a forward to shoot it!! You also need to remember that its important to get the ball out of the 18 especially on corners! You have to get it out of trouble by heading it kicking it or anything u can do so its away from the goal, but if u have time u want to remember that just kicking it doesnt always help! When u have time look to the outside mid-fielders to pass too! You also have to remember to talk to ur team, when ur in the back u can see alot more then the other players and when u behind the ball u have to be able to be there to be the players eyes! Talk to them let them know if they have a man on or they have time to control the ball! You also have to be support to the mid-fielders if they get in trouble. When someone is coming at u 1v1 always watch the ball not the players feet! Always get back after ur beat and support the other defenders! Do anything to get the ball from going in the net! Also a good thing to remember is on corning u want to head the ball up and away not towards the midlle or down on the ground. When u have the ball in the middle pass to the sidelines where ur mid-fielders should be and never play the ball across the middle especially in the 18!!! I know this is alot but hope it helps!!

There are 2 basic types of defense:
1. Man-to-man marking: you focus on opponents
2. Zonal marking: you focus on your area
Nowadays, second approach is more popular among football teams, although sometimes they apply first approach, e.g. when opponents get free kick or corner kick.
The most 'stubborn' type of defense, called 'catenaccio' was invented by Helenio Herrera, and applied successfully by Inter Milan and Italy national team. This system uses four backs plus one sweeper between them and goalkeeper. This system depends heavily upon efective counter-attacks. Nowadays this system has been left, even in Italy. Teams prefer to use four backs without sweeper.
As a defender, you must watch all movements of opponents and ball. You should build teamwork and understanding with your teammates, especially defending players and goalkeeper. Mark every player coming to your area, and anticipate threats. Intercept passes, because this saves you lots of energy, and intercept means a player wins against two.
Do tackles if it is possible, and don't let opponents shoot freely. You may also apply offside trap, but this needs high teamwork level.
Wish u good luck!

it also depends what defensive position you are playing.
the sweeper stays behind the rest of the defenders and acts as a "back-up" defender.
other than that, make sure you stay on your man. prevent him from getting any closer to the goal, even it it means kicking the ball out of bounds, that way they loser their momentum.
however, don't just play kick ball and try to kick the ball every moment you can.
when you have possession of the ball, keep your control of the ball.
also, prevent the other team from passing to each other.
win every ball in the air (head it).

Look at the ball and not the feet, when they dribble towards you try to lead them towards the sideline and not the center, It will give you an advantage for a strong tackle or even a possible slide tackle in case they mess up.
