William of Orange and Mary II came to the throne. William was the son of James II's sisters and Mary was the daughter of James by his first wife. Mary II should have been queen alone, but William was unwilling to be consort, so there co-ruled. This is the one and only time there has been a queen and a king, rather than a consort. They were Protestants, getting rid of James II and the 'Jacobites'. If James had been allowed to continue upon his death, his son by his second wife a Catholic would have been king. A Catholic king, head of the Church of England, no way!

If you really think about it, Puritans and Huguenots are nothing more than subcategories of "Protestants." . . . So I'm betting the appropriate answer is "Protestant."

The Protestant King William III (William of Orange) and his wife Queen Mary II --who are usually known as "William and Mary" replaced Mary's father James II.

(James II had converted to Catholicism, which- in combination with his poor political skills -- managed to lose him the thrones of England and Scotland.)
