I want to make a cd... with my favourite songs for myself.
but is it a legal to download free songs for your own use?
or is it consider stealing?

If the songs are copyrighted, then it is illegal. If it is popular music that you hear on the radio, it is almost guaranteed the music is copyrighted.

Downloading is illegal too; It is stealing. But the record labels are going after the people who supply a large number of songs. Sort of like going after drug dealers instead of just the users...

So, it is stealing, but let's face it, you're not going to get caught. Its a moral decision.

DOWNLOADING is not illegal. But be warned that UPLOADING (copyrighted content) is very illegal (in the U.S anyway).

Most P2P programmes automatically upload as you are downloading which creates a violation of copyright law if the selection is copyrighted.

if you download songs from legitimate websites, definitely it's not piracy because you're paying for the service, besides it's for your own use...
