I have rescued raised and rehabbed many koalas. It drives me nuts that people seem to think they are aggressive nasty or vindictive beasts. They are only aggressive if they are cornered and frightened. I have been called upon to rescue full grown male koalas on many occasions. I have never had more than a scratch or a bite that hurt but didn't break the skin. And the only protection I use is a folded blanket that I throw over the animal in order to grab it. Koalas are laid back animals. Once they work out you mean them no harm, they usually accept pretty much anything. They are not animals exclusively available to the filthy rich either! If you live in Australia you can potentially purchase a captive bred animal for roughly $2000 AUD. (A mate of mine with a private zoo just recently bought one) (a far sight cheaper than a Blue and Gold Macaw which sells for over $7000 here in Aus) That is providing that you had the proper permits issued by the proper authorities. Before being granted those permits you would have your premises inspected, and the enclosure would be required to met certain guidelines. They are are placid animals, but the real challenge is feeding them. In order to keep a koala in captivity healthy you have to have access to many species of gum trees, and be able to provide at least 3 varieties per day. I have cared for Penguins as well, and they are no easier. You would still be required to have permits. And they would actually be a lot more expensive to maintain. They require salt water pools and an endless supply of fish. Because what goes in eventually comes out, they are rather smelly. They can also be loud and nocturnal. But contrary to a previous answer, they are far from stupid! And they learn very quickly where the food comes from and will follow you around. I have been bitten by penguins as well. As far as I am concerned I would take a koala bite over a penguin bite any day. Unfortunately, unless you aspire to work for a zoo or be a wildlife carer in Australia the likelihood that you would be able to have these animals is slim to none.

Have you researched koalas at all?
Apart from those orphaned and captivity-bred specimen, koalas are evil creatures.
They have not yet been domesticated, mainly because they hold little appeal-- all they do is eat, sleep and excrete waste. Yeah, they're cute at face value, but look a little closer and you'll see the inch-long razor-sharp claws and a vicious temperament.
The only people who could buy a koala are the filthy rich idiots that occupy television, and environmentalists such as Steve Irwin.
Koalas are an endangered species, due to deforestation and land development, and are unable to be taken out of Australia unless they are being sent to some form of zoological establishment.
The same goes for penguins. They smell horrible, they're noisy and they're not intelligent enough to realise you are their owner, so they'll continue to be scared of you.

Wow, Looks like you have an exotic taste in cuddly pets. Sorry buddy, but koalas are off limits. They would sleep all day. And you'd have to plant a bunch of trees. If you got into a good relation with a zoo or something, or if you were to work there later in life, you might be able to handle some koalas, but otherwise, a slim chance, my friend. And I doubt they'd sell koalas on the black market.
Try the zoo idea someday.

You cant buy a koala because they are an Australian native animal. Also as cute as they are, Koala's have very long sharp claws (to help for climbing trees) and sharp teeth. They are quite aggressive when provoked and are not the cute cuddly teddy bear you think they are.
You can support one by helping them get rahibilitated and released back into the bush after an accident. Go to the website below:

No they aren't good pets at all. They have a very exclusive diet, fresh Eucalyptus leaves only, so very hard and expensive to get.
Also, they are not the cuddly creatures they appear to be, they can in fact be quite vicious, especially if not getting a regular supply of eucalyptus.
Panda bears are cute too, why not try one of them as a pet >;P
Seriously, these are wild exotic animals, much happier in the wild than in your backyard or wreckroom.
Penguins are from the Ant-Arctic for heaven sake, do you live in a deep freeze? If not, the penguin will be miserable.
If you want to stand out, get a de-scented skunk, they're very like cats in their disposition, but MAN do they turn heads when you take them for a walk!

Koalas were once on the Endangered Animals list, and are still considered an animal of the wild, available only to zoos, I do believe. Try and Internet search for more info, if you like.
Good luck!

NO you can not buy a Koala bear because there is no such thing!!!! A Koala is not a bear its a marsupial. Even if it were a bear i believe you would have to be licensed as a zoo properly before you could have one at all.

both of those animals are really not good for pets.
1) koala are Not Nice! they are actually kind of mean when they are scared, which it would be , and even if they were nice,i dont think thats legal, and it would be Really hard to keep well and happy. plus, it would have possibly been cruelly removed from the wild.
2) where do i start on penguins...........
Get my point???

Koala's are an endangered species, so they will not be available any time, soon. Penguins require very cold temps and a lot of rushing water.

You can't get a kola bear but you can go to the Artic and get a penguin but I don't think that would last a long time as a pet without a cold temperature.
